A Great Turnout at the Student & CPA Candidate Social Event

In the late afternoon/early evening of September 25, 2006, the Austin CPA Chapter hosted a networking event for student and candidate members. We also invited non-student members from area schools to find out what TSCPA and the Austin Chapter is all about. We had almost 50 students and candidates join us at Dave & Busters, and half of them joined the Chapter that day!

Plenty of food was served and CPA volunteers helped staff informational booths, which included Community Involvement, Scholarship/Membership, Career Center/Advisor, Toastmasters and Becker Review. Jerry Love, CPA, TSCPA Chairman, gave a great presentation on why it’s important to finish your education and get that CPA license. The Chapter gave away Dave & Busters Power Cards and Starbucks gift cards as door prizes, and Becker had a set of their coveted flash cards as a prize.

It’s not too late to take advantage of the $10 first-time student membership good through August 2007. Sign up here today! In the “Charge Amount” field, just put $10 – it’s easy at that!

Please note that this applies to Austin-area students only.

Two of the biggest benefits of becoming a TSCPA and Austin CPA Chapter Student member are the Chapter Scholarships (open to student members only, applications must be postmarked by November 1, 2006) and the $250 discount to Becker Review. Student members also have access to the same resources as CPA members - click here to read all about it.

Diana Sullivan, CPA, Manager of Member Services, volunteered her time at the Membership/Scholarship table. Here is where students could sign up for membership and take information about the Chapter scholarship. This table was very busy for the duration of the event!

Linda Messing, Chapter Staff, and Elaine Hanks, CPA, had their post at the Career Center/Advisor booth. Students and candidates asked questions about what should go on a résumé and what sort of career opportunities are available through the Chapter.

The Community Involvement table had information about the Casino Night Scholarship Fundraiser, Entertainment passbooks and current volunteer opportunities.

Mike Seay, CPA, Attorney, headed the Toastmasters table. Our guests learned about how to improve their speaking skills and where to join the club.

Becker Review is a big deal to those about to take the CPA exam. Deb Alvarado, the Becker representative, is a long-time friend of the Austin CPA Chapter.

Jerry Love, CPA, gave a great presentation to our guests. We were very appreciative that he was able to attend our function.
