The
Austin Chapter has a number of new opportunities for our student
members!
In the first
of a planned series of professional development events, student
members gathered in the Chapter's
training facility to hear from a panel featuring CPAs representing
the wide variety of accounting careers. Panelist and Chapter
President-Elect Jesse Dominguez files this report on the event:
The future CPAs first meeting successfully combined seasoned
CPAs in industry, government, and public practice with CPA
students and candidates. The almost three-hour event allowed
the future CPAs to learn about the various roads to success
in passing the CPA exam as well as the decision-making involved
in choosing a career path that best fit each CPA's needs.
CPAs learned about what the current generation of future CPAs
seeks in an employer as they enter the workforce. Future CPAs
learned about the diversity of employers and the need to become
an expert to open the door to future career options. All agreed
the TSCPA provides many forums for expanding a future CPAs
leadership, community service, networking, and knowledge of
prospective career opportunities. As a panelist, I benefited
from knowing that my peers held in high regard this noble
profession and the vast opportunities the CPA license has
provided them. I would have greatly benefited from an event
like this when I was first getting my career off the ground.
Thanks to all who participated.
A second
event featuring guest speakers from the Texas State Board of
Accountancy is in development now.
In addition
to these opportunities for valuable face-to-face networking,
the Chapter has begun a Yahoo!
discussion board devoted exclusively to the needs and interests
of our student members. Membership on the
board is not limited to students, however: any Chapter member
is welcome to join this
group and participate in discussions.
